The San Diego Unified School District and the Board of Education are committed to transparency, accountability, and keeping students at the center of all that we do. The district strives to create conditions where students feel they belong and can thrive academically and socially.

To achieve that aim, the Board and district leaders have worked collaboratively to engage students, staff, families and school communities in the development of specific and measurable goals for student achievement.

The goals for student achievement outline what we want students to be able to know and do and are based on the vision and values of the community.

Guardrail - Effective Communication and Family Engagement

The Superintendent shall not operate without a healthy communication system for students and families and shall not operate without authentic, ongoing engagement with families and community partners in the design, implementation, and review of district programs and policies.

There is strong alignment around the adopted goals and guardrails throughout the district, from School Plans for Student Achievement to the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

This not only signals strong unity and cohesion across the organization but also allows students to achieve greater success with all schools and departments working together toward a shared set of goals.  

Glossary:

California Dashboard Academic Indicator: As established by the five-by-five colored tables used to determine performance results for Dashboard state indicators.

Guardrail: Operational class of actions the Superintendent may not use or allow in pursuit of the district's Student Outcome Goals. Guardrails reflect community values.

Healthy Communication: Transparent, proactive, and culturally responsive, multi-channel communication.

Significant Annual Growth: Based on a median growth in the first year of Spotlight Students' path towards proficiency goals. To ensure the goal is ambitious yet attainable, these measures are bounded by the 80th percentile of growth for students in a given placement of the baseline diagnostic.

Spotlight Students: TK-8 students, based on assessment and other academic indicators, who are in the bottom 15 percent in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math at their school site. Grade 9-12 students with the lowest academic grades as measured by their Grade Point Average (GPA) and other academic indicators.

Student Outcome Goals: SMART policy statements that are student outcomes focused that describe the district's top priorities during the time frames over which they were adopted. The first priority for resource allocation should be focused on achieving the goals. The goals codify community vision.
